It was only a matter of time before other streaming providers emulated Netflix, increased subscription prices, and cracked down on account sharing. Disney+ plans to start charging more by the end of the year and is threatening to take action against password sharing.
Disney+ raises subscription prices
Not good news for all Disney+ subscribers. The streaming provider again increases the prices for subscriptions. In 2021, there was an outcry from the users here; instead of 6.99 euros per month, suddenly 8.99 euros were to be paid. Now it’s not only getting more expensive but from November 1, there will also be new subscription models. For example, the premium version for 11.99 euros (four streams simultaneously) and the standard subscription for 8.99 euros (two streams simultaneously). A cheaper version with advertising will also be available, just like Netflix has been doing for a short time. Here, two streams simultaneously are also possible, but with advertising interruption.
According to a press release from Disney+, the new prices will only apply to new customers starting in November. However, with the clause “future changes reserved.” Means: Also, all existing subscribers should be prepared to pay more in the future.
Problem password sharing becomes an issue
But that’s not all! Similar to Netflix, Disney+ now wants to crack down on password sharing and find ways to stop sharing a single account with multiple households. As Deadline reports, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the company is actively addressing this “problem.” However, there are no concrete indications of what this means for users yet. However, it is said that Disney will start updating subscriber agreements and sharing policies later this year.
The CEO did not give an exact number of customers who share their passwords, but he emphasized that the number is “significant. In addition, Disney has technology in place to monitor logins, he said. The plan, he said, is to address this issue in detail in 2024. However, it added that the first changes regarding password sharing are unlikely to be made before 2025.
Fewer movies and series from “Star Wars” and “Marvel.”
Disney+ subscribers still have to cope with a third damper. Because as Bob Iger also announced, they want to introduce a significant change in future productions. The streaming provider wants to produce fewer films and series around “Star Wars” and “Marvel” comics from now on. In addition, those productions that are ultimately approved are to get by with far less budget than before.
Another planned innovation: Disney is said to have set up a working group that deals only with artificial intelligence. The idea is to use this to figure out how AI can be used strategically as a major media company – for moviemaking, for example.
